What is a backronym?
A backronym is an acronym in reverse. Instead of starting with a phrase and taking the first letter of each word, you start with a word and make each letter the start of a new word or part of a phrase.
How is Acrosticism different from other word games?
Most word games give you unlimited options. Acrosticism doesn't. Your hand is limited to what you're dealt at the start of the game and every card you play is gone for good. Acrosticism is a game of attrition.
Can kids play?
If they can read, they can play. Children love Acrosticism because it gives them the freedom to make up silly phrases without any wrong answers.
How long does a game take?
A single round with 3 players takes about 15 minutes. On average, expect roughly 5 minutes per player per round. The longest games tend to be 7 players going 3 full rounds, which clocks in at about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
How many people can play?
Acrosticism comfortably seats 3 to 7 players. Expansions are on the way that will include new Word Cards and Theme Cards, which will increase the player count and add even more variety to the game.
What happens if I can't make a backronym from my Word Card?
Unfortunately, you forfeit that Word Card for the turn. The 2-minute timer exists for a reason, and not every word is going to fit every theme. That's part of the strategy.
Can I use small words like "a" and "the" in my backronym?
Absolutely, and it's encouraged. Small connector words like "a," "the," "and," and "of" can be used between your letters to make your backronym flow naturally and make the act of acrosticizing faster and easier.
What if there's a tie?
Ties are not disputed. However, if your table wants a definitive winner, the Chaotic Remix Final Tribunal was designed exactly for that situation.
How does the Judge decide a winner?
However they want. The Judge's decision is final and can be based on anything from pure favoritism to comedic value to logical accuracy for the theme. Unless the table is using the Unanimous Bonus Chaotic Remix, in which case the whole table weighs in.
Can the Judge play a Word Card?
No. The Judge draws and presents a Theme Card for the turn and evaluates everyone else's backronyms. They do not acrosticize a Word Card that turn.
What happens to cards after they're played?
Word Cards are discarded after each turn. Theme Cards are awarded to the winner of each turn and kept as points until the end of the game.
Can I draw new cards during the game?
No. Acrosticism is a game of attrition. What you're dealt is what you get. That said, you do have options: every player gets one Mulligan per game to swap out any number of Word Cards, and the Chaotic Remix Burn One allows you to spend a Theme Card to discard and draw a new Word Card.
What are Chaotic Remixes?
Chaotic Remixes are optional rules and game enhancements that add an extra layer of challenge, creativity, or chaos to your game. They range from mild and inconsequential, like Wild Cards and Mulligan, to dramatically game-changing, like Blind Tribute and Final Tribunal.
Can I combine Chaotic Remixes?
Not only can you combine them, but it's also encouraged once you're comfortable with the base game. We call the combinations Chaotic Combos, and they can significantly change the pacing and feel of the game. Start slow and dial up the chaos at your own pace.
